Pawnee Scouts
From 1864-1871, more than 100 tribal members of the Pawnee Nation served at Fort Kearny as U.S Army Pawnee Scouts. Their protection of area settlers and the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad paved the way for the city of Kearney to safely be established in 1873. We want to honor descendants of the Pawnee Scouts as part of Kearney’s sesquicentennial celebration.
Pawnee Seed Preservation Society
In 2003 the Pawnee Seed Preservation Society began working with gardeners in Kearney in hopes to return their sacred crops from the brink of extinction in the Pawnee homeland. The project quickly expanded to include gardeners across Nebraska. The Society wishes to honor Nebraska and its 20th homeland harvest at Fort Kearny.
Please help us welcome the Pawnee back to Fort Kearny and Kearney.
