Kearney Water Trail 101

Summer is here and vitamin D is begging for our attention once again! Kearney has a great arrangement of outdoor recreation and its Water Trail is a hidden gem. This unique attraction can be found right within Kearney city limits.

The 2.3 miles trail starts at 1120 West 11th Street with an entrance landing at Yanney Park. It follows the Kearney Canal, flowing into Turkey Creek. The exit landing is west of Central Ave by Midway Auto.

The Kearney Whitewater Association has completed the two new whitewater features and is ready for the public’s enjoyment. If you aren’t ready to take on the water features there are exits near where you can get out and take your kayak around (shown below).

The great thing about this trial is the experience is what you make it. Whether you need a quick wind-down after a busy day or you want to enjoy all the scenery– the trail is perfect for both! Even first-timers can enjoy the two new whitewater structures added this spring.

If you have your own kayak, canoe, or paddle board, perfect, head to Yanney Park (2020 W 11th Street.) The put-in is right off 11th Street at the Northeast corner of the park.

If you don’t have a kayak, no need to fret, you can rent one from Kearney Paddle Sports. They offer trips from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday-Sunday each week. Booking through them is convenient as they offer a pick-up and drop-off. For additional information, visit their website at kearneypaddlesports.com

Either way, here are a few tips and tricks to ensure the most fun our your trip:

  • Bring the necessities: a personal flotation device (PFD), sunscreen, water, and good footwear! Lifejackets are highly recommended as there are no water safety personnel on duty. There may be debris left from the 2019 flooding so that last one is also really important.
  • A towel wouldn’t hurt! On a water trial, it’s safe to say you might get splashed a time or two so be prepared to use your towel, either for a seat cushion or to dry off.
  • Relax! While the trail is in city limits, the scenery you will see once the embankments go up is not city at all! Trees, grass, and wildlife bring a soothing atmosphere, almost making you forget where you truly are.

The season typically runs from April to October so go enjoy this one-of-a-kind recreational opportunity today!
