Glass was one of John Nygren's many interests when he was growing up on the farm in Nebraska. Born into a family of collectors, he accumulated an assortment of old medicine bottles and Mason jars. As an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, John's interest in glass was peaked by his professor and printmaker Jean Richards.

After receiving his B.F.A. in 1965 from Lincoln, Nygren moved on to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where he received his M.F.A. This was followed by a three-week glassblowing course at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, which changed his life. There he gained the basic skills and confidence to dedicate his creative energy to glass art.

The central theme reflected in Nygren's art has always been a deep-felt reverence towards Mother Earth. His love of nature is expressed in the artistic excellence of his work. A naturalist, John Nygren has a great respect for wildlife, heightened by a fascination with entomology as well as frogs, persimmon trees and sunsets serve as a central force as well as the motifs which guide his artistic journey
